India's Quantum Leap: Over 40 Quantum Technology Startups in Just Two Years

India has witnessed a significant surge in the field of quantum technology, with over 40 quantum technology startups emerging in the past two years. This rapid growth reflects the nation's commitment to advancing in quantum technologies and solidifying its position on the global stage.

During a recent review meeting of the Department of Science and Technology in New Delhi, Dr. Jitendra Singh, the Science and Technology Minister, emphasized the importance of the National Quantum Mission. He directed officials to focus on the development of quantum technologies and quantum communication, highlighting that India is currently on par with other leading nations in this domain. The mission's ultimate goal is to establish India as a global leader in quantum technologies.

Understanding Quantum Technology

Quantum technology leverages the principles of quantum mechanics to perform complex calculations and solve problems that are currently intractable with classical computing methods. This technology has profound implications across various sectors, including:

QuNu Labs has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Technology Development Board (TDB) to develop security products based on quantum technologies. Empowering Women in Science and Technology

Dr. Singh noted a significant increase in women's participation in extramural research and development (R&D) over the past decade. This progress is attributed to the government's targeted efforts to promote women scientists and researchers through initiatives like the fellowship STEM program. Furthermore, the recently inaugurated Common Fellowship Portal has simplified the application process, encouraging more women to apply for research grants. Under the ASPIRE scheme, around 300 women scientists are set to receive research grants for three years, demonstrating the government's commitment to gender equity in science and technology.

The minister expressed his satisfaction with India's transformation into a global startup capital. The number of startups has grown from a few hundred before 2014 to over 125,000 in 2024, including more than 110 unicorns. Advancements in the Global Innovation Index

India's ranking in the Global Innovation Index has seen a remarkable improvement, jumping from 81st in 2015 to 40th in 2023. This rise reflects the country's growing emphasis on innovation and research. India now ranks third globally in terms of the number of scientific publications and PhDs awarded in science and engineering.

Government Initiatives and Investments

The minister highlighted several key initiatives and investments by the government to foster innovation and entrepreneurship:

  • National Initiative for Developing and Harnessing Innovations (NIDHI): Since 2016, the Indian government has invested around 900 crores in this initiative to support budding entrepreneurs in science and technology.
  • Ease of Applying: The Common Fellowship Portal has streamlined the application process for research grants, making it more accessible to a wider pool of applicants.
  • Support for Startups: Various schemes and programs have been launched to provide financial and infrastructural support to startups, encouraging innovation across different sectors.
